      Adding Like Fractions

Steps to find the sum of two or more like fractions:

Step 1 Find the new numerator by adding the numerators of the given fractions.

Step 2 Retain the (common) denominator.

Step 3 Write the new numerator over the denominator.

Step 4 Simplify the fraction if required.

      Example: Add 2/5 and 1/5

      Example 1: Solve 3/18 + 5/18

      Subtracting Like Fractions

Steps to find the difference of two or more like fractions:

Step 1 Find the new numerator by subtracting the smaller numerator from the bigger numerator.

Step 2 Retain the (common) denominator.

Step 3 Write the new numerator over the denominator.

Step 4 Simplify the fraction if required.

      Example: Subtract 3/8 from 7/8.

Example 4: Find the difference between 15/21 and 11/21.

Example 5: Fill in the missing fractions.

Example 6: Fill in the missing fractions.

Example 7: Jim was given 2/9 of a basket of grapes. What fraction of grapes was left in the basket?
