Collective Nouns
Read the following sentences:
· He made his way through the crowd.
· This is a bunch of keys.
· They were attacked by a swarm of bees.
Here the words crowd, bunch and swarm stand for a collection of people, a collection of keys and a collection of bees. Nouns which are thus used to denote a collection of people or things are called collective nouns.
A collective noun is a word used to describe a group of people, animal and specific items. For example- a group of people is called crowd, a group of cows is called a herd; a group of lions is called a pride etc.
