Topic outline

    • Multiplication as Repeated Addition

Here we have four groups, and each group has three flowers.

We can use addition to join equal groups

      3 + 3 + 3 + 3 =12 flowers

Hence, there are 12 flowers in all.

Adding the same number repeatedly is called repeated addition.

The sign × indicates multiplication and we can use multiplication also to solve the same problem.

      We can represent 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 =12 using ‘X’ sign as 4 x 3 = 12

      4 x 3 means 4 times 3 (i.e. 3 is added 4 times)

Example: How many bananas are there in all?

3 groups, 2 bananas in each group

      3 × 2 bananas = 6 bananas

      Or

      2 + 2 + 2  =  6
