Read the following sentences.
1. He drives carefully.
2. She spoke softly.
3. Girl runs quickly.
4. She writes neatly.
The highlighted words carefully, softly, quickly and neatly add something to the meaning of the verbs drives, spoke, runs and writes. They tell us how an action is done. They are called Adverbs.
Read the following sentences.
1. Dia got up early.
2. I saw Sia today.
3. My mom came late.
4. I went to the doctor yesterday.
The highlighted words early, today, late and yesterday add something to the meaning of the verbs got up, saw, came and went. They tell us when the action is done. They are called Adverbs.
Read the following sentences.
1. The boys are playing upstairs.
2. It is very sunny outside.
3. He lives here.
4. The bottle is there.
The highlighted words upstairs, outside, here and there add something to the meaning of the verbs are playing, is, lives and is. They tell us where the action is done. They are called Adverbs.
Therefore, a word which adds something to the meaning of a verb, and tells us how a thing is done, when it is done, or where it is done, is called an Adverb.
