Less Than – Greater Than
Things to Remember
· When one value is bigger than another we use a "greater than" sign i.e. ‘>’.
Example: 8>3
· When one value is smaller than another we use a "less than" sign i.e. ‘<’.
Example: 5<7
Let’s
observe the number line.
The number to the left of a given number is less than that number.
The number to the right of a given number is greater than that number.
Example 1
Put the correct symbol > or < in the blank space.
6 ____ 8
On the number line, ‘6’ lies to the left of ‘8’.
So, 6 is less than 8
Hence, 6<8
Example 2
Put the correct symbol > or < in the blank space.
7 ____ 3
On the number line, ‘7’ lies to the right of ‘3’.
So, 7 is greater than 3
Hence, 7>3
